About this item
A 108-bead mala of five-mukhi rudraksha, plus the guru bead, strung on cotton.
Five-mukhi — five faces, meaning five natural clefts running down each bead — is the common and traditional bead for a japa mala, and the one actually used for counting. Each bead is a seed, so they vary slightly in size and colour, and that variation is what tells you they were not moulded.
Strung on cotton rather than elastic, with a knot between beads, so it can be counted properly and so a break loses one bead instead of a hundred and eight.
Keep it dry, and oil it occasionally with a drop of almond or sandalwood oil if it starts to look chalky. Restringing free whenever it needs it.
